Stretching along the banks of the Zambezi River, just a short walk from the world-famous Victoria Falls, is a hotel like no other: the Royal Livingstone. Named for the famed explorer, the luxury hotel spans 17 colonial-style buildings whose architecture and interiors reflect the romance of travel in the Victorian era.

There are 173 spacious en-suite guest rooms, each with its own private verandah. Dining choices range from the elegant Royal Livingstone Dining Room to an intimate candlelit dinner under the canopy of the hotel’s famous Monkey Tree. Groups can travel back in time with a unique culinary experiences aboard the steam locomotive Royal Livingstone Express, and high tea is a daily tradition.

Water taxi transfers and complimentary hand massages upon arrival are among the special touches that await guests. Days are filled with opportunities for adventure, from elephant-back safaris to river cruises to scenic helicopter flights. And then there are the falls — the world’s largest sheet of falling water — where Royal Livingstone guests enjoy unlimited access through the hotel’s own private entrance.

Back at the hotel, guests might indulge in an al fresco massage overlooking the Zambezi River or relax poolside or in a hammock while resident zebras graze nearby. The Royal Livingstone’s two sundecks are an ideal spot to gather with other travelers for the ritual sundowner — an evening drink as the sun sets over the river.
