Hotel Metropol Moscow

Property Description

The magnificent Hotel Metropol offers a window into early 20th-century Russian society, across from the Bolshoi Theater, and just blocks from the Kremlin and Red Square. An outstanding example of modernist design, this historic treasure opened in 1901. It was the first hotel in Russia with such luxuries as hot water, elevators and telephones, and sophisticated travelers and Muscovites streamed through its doors.

After a dramatic history that saw it transformed into a government residence under Bolshevist rule, then back to a hotel and through major renovations, the Metropol has returned to the glory of its heyday. Guests enjoy luxurious accommodations that evoke the hotel’s storied past through stuccoed ceilings, antique chandeliers, parquet floors, and early 20th-century furnishings.

Among the Metropol’s luxury suites, which have served as film settings and are featured on tours, is one of the city’s most spectacular: the Presidential. This expansive suite is filled with extraordinary artworks, a grand piano, and antique furnishings, and features its own drawing room, bedroom, study, luxurious bath and sauna.

Dining

Metropol: In the hotel’s historic main restaurant, guests dine on blini and caviar, sturgeon and other expertly prepared Russian classics under a magnificent glass dome. The Metropol is equally famed for its European cuisine and cartes-des-vins. Heads of state and world-famous entertainers have held court in this monumental hall, whose historic ambience is enhanced with neoclassic details such as a marble fountain and a splendid, Rubenesque wall painting.

Evropeisky: From Greek salad to Norwegian shrimp, international favorites share the menu with traditional Russian fare such as beef stroganoff and borscht at this expansive restaurant, which was once the finest coffee-hall in Moscow. Designed in the manner of a Roman atrium, with two rows of columns topped by a skylight, Evropeisky, which translates to “European,” showcases remarkable paintings in classical style on the walls and ceiling.

Shalyapin Bar: Named for the Russian opera singer, an international star of the early 20th century, the Metropol’s impressive bar offers a variety of drinks, snacks and desserts surrounded by design details from the hotel’s 1901 opening, including marble columns, a stuccoed ceiling and the original modernist-style chandeliers.

Meetings and Events

From business meetings to weddings and banquets, Moscow’s most high-powered and opulent events have been hosted at the Metropol for more than 100 years, with the highest level of luxury, service and security. There are as many as 19 banquet halls of various sizes and styles, the crown jewel of which is the Metropol Hall, with its stained-glass domed roof, marble fountain, and monumental lighting. In the more intimate Boyarsky Hall, Russian feasts are staged for groups of up to 60, complete with folk music and traditional games.

The hotel’s expert staff handles every detail from hall rental to entertainment to exceptional catering. Wifi and advanced technical equipment accommodate the most sophisticated meeting needs.
